5 Minutes to Midnight

Thursday, January 18th, 2007

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists moved the Doomsday Clock forward two minutes to five minutes to midnight.  The two driving reasons were risk of nuclear proliferation in unstable countries and global warming.

I’ve talked about nuclear proliferation before.  There is zero reason for the need or use of nuclear weapons, but this is something that the average person has little control over, except to elect the right people and to be an activist.

Global warming is something we all have some part in, even if the steps are small.  Many months ago I put a link to ClimateCrisis.net on my sidebar.  It contains tools you can use to measure your own carbon footprint and how to reduce it.

In my life, I try to take this seriously. Our house has only energy saving bulbs (you can find these for less than a dollar a bulb if you shop around). We elected with our power company to have a portion of our power to be generated from renewable energy sources. Jessica, before her job moved too far away, would even walk to work.

We should all do what it takes to move that clock back.
